It is so easy to fall into the trap of setting too many goals. You start out really clear and excited about all the great things you’re going to achieve. But then… daily tasks and the running of the business get in the way.
The danger of setting too many big goals is that they become like New Years Resolutions, they just don’t happen.
So what’s the solution?
The solution is to focus on your BAU (business as usual) tasks and goals and then set ONE Wildly Important Goal that will move the dial in your business (in other words, your business success depends on it) where it is needed the most.
This could be a revenue or sales goal, a quality or process goal. You could choose to focus on an area that needs fixing or an area of opportunity that can do with a boost.
Here’s three important things to keep top of mind when setting goals
- Get clear on your goals
- Consider Why they are important and Why doing them
- Include a process for your daily and weekly tasks (setting smaller goals will give you a better chance of achieving the big goal)
The reality is, you will be working and putting massive effort in to your business regardless if you set goals or not. Make sure your efforts and your actions count by creating action with purpose and throw out taking action for the sake of it (or action that only exists to make you feel good about doing something).
